Dollywood's Light the Way 5K Race Recap

by Glenneth on November 19, 2011

Whew am I tired. After a 3AM morning due to Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 1 (LOVED THE MOVIE) and a 1AM morning for the Light the Way 5K, I am worn out. I am definitely not a night owl. Thankfully I have two days to rest and recover.

Last night we went to Dollywood in Pigeon Forge to participate in the first ever Light the Way 5K. The money raised benefits an assistance program that helps Dollywood’s employees. They had a great turnout – I would guess 300-400 people.

My goal for this race was to (a) finish and (b) not injure myself. Both were accomplished. I was a little nervous about it being in the dark because they said some areas were treacherous and uneven. I didn’t have any problems. I didn’t set a goal time to finish because part of my excitement for doing the race was to see the lights in Dollywood. And, of course, stop and take pictures. So, the race turned out to be my slowest 5K ever. I am OK with that since I had a blast.

First a few Pros and Cons of the race.

Pros:
* Extremely well-organized (you know how I like that)
* Three water stops with PLENTY of volunteers
* A jam packed goodie bag (tshirt, two bags, water bottle, hat, and more)

Cons:
* The first half of the race was through the parking lot and back, not very exciting.

This was really a fun event and I think it could definitely become a tradition of ours. Now for some pictures. I definitely need to play with my new camera some more and learn to take great night photos. Here are some of the best:

It was a fun and beautiful race. And COLD! Did I mention the temps were near freezing? I dressed in layers (and kept them all on). Even wore two pairs of gloves. It was worth it though. Fantastic race.

Hope you have a great weekend! I will be resting and I see a nap in my near future.

Even though the first part of the race might not have seemed exciting, it kind of was since you are never allowed on the tram road. It is totally off limits when the park is in operation, so we got to “break the law” on the first leg of the race! It was a cold, but fin night!
